Midfielder Tran Bao Toan scored the only goal to help Vietnam beat Thailand 1-0 in the final of 2022 AFF U-23 Championship on the evening of February 26 in Cambodia.
The 2022 AFF U-23 Championship was the 3rd edition of the AFF U-23 Championship, organised by ASEAN Football Federation (AFF). The tournament was held from 14 to 26 February in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Indonesia are the defending champions, having won the 2019 edition. The tournament was held amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Indonesia and Myanmar withdrew from the tournament after several of their players tested positive for COVID-19.
The goal occurred in the 45th minute. Originating from the corner kick, a Thai U23 player headed the ball to break the ball into the right position of Anh Viet. Anh Viet returned the ball to Tuan Tai to make the correct flip so that Bao Toan bounced high to head, putting the ball into the far corner of Thailand U23’s goal.
The only goal of the match
Before the opening goal, U23 Vietnam had a relatively difficult match. Coach Dinh The Nam’s students had many moments of good control of the game and created a few scoring opportunities. But also many times, Thailand U23 pressed the pitch and constantly threatened the U23 Vietnam goal. In particular, goalkeeper Tuan Hung’s goal was once shaken after Phochai’s long shot.
U23 Vietnam took advantage of the rising U23 Thailand to create many dangerous attacks. However, in the final situation, the strikers of U23 Vietnam failed to take advantage. Towards the end, the experience of U23 Vietnam is more and more shown when the students of coach Dinh The Nam play calmly and bravely. Meanwhile, Thailand U23 was impatient.
In the end, U23 Vietnam beat Thailand U23 1-0 to win the 2022 AFF U23 Championship for the first time.
