The largest blue diamond in world history has just been auctioned in Hong Kong (China) and sold for $ 57,471,960.
Called The De Beers Cullinan Blue, this massive diamond has a mass of 15.1 carats. It got its owner after an eight-minute bidding war between four potential buyers, according to Sotheby’s.
This diamond was found at the Cullinan mine (Premier Mine) in South Africa in 2021. It was later assessed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) as fancy vivid blue – the highest color grade of a diamond.
However, the price of The De Beers Cullinan Blue is still not the most expensive blue diamond ever sold at auction. 1st place currently belongs to the diamond named – Oppenheimer Blue. It is lighter, 14.62 carats. The Oppenheimer Blue sold in 2016 with a final price of $57,541,779.
