The painting “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn” depicting the legendary female star Marilyn Monroe by artist Andy Warhol officially became the most expensive painting of the 20th century.
“Shot Sage Blue Marilyn” – an iconic portrait of American film legend Marilyn Monroe by American artist Andy Warhol – was purchased for $195 million in an auction held at Christie’s headquarters in Manhattan, New York City (USA) on May 9.
After the auction, it was owned by French billionaire Francois Pinault (François Pinault) for exactly 195.04 million USD (including accompanying costs).
The most expensive painting previously was “Women of Algiers” by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso, which sold for $179.4 million in 2015.
