Japanese police arrested suspect Tetsuya Yamagami (42) and seized a gun at the scene of the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
According to the results of the investigation, assassin Yamagami Tetsuya (山上徹也) was a member of the JMSDF (Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force). Because he is a former professional soldier, he has the ability to shoot accurately.
Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot while giving a speech in the southwestern Japanese city of Nara. He was taken to the hospital and is in a deep coma.
According to NHK, witnesses said Abe was shot from behind and collapsed, he died at the hospital.
According to the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), the former Japanese prime minister was shot in the chest twice.
A task force has been formed following the incident and a government spokesman is expected to speak soon.
Elections for The House of Councillors (参議院, Sangiin) (the upper house of the National Diet of Japan) will be held on July 10. Former prime minister Shinzo Abe, who resigned in 2020, is participating in a campaign event for other members of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.
